Overview of this 3-day event

On April 23rd to 25th, 2012, The Conference Board of Canada will be hosting an event in Toronto called:

Workforce One-Stop 2012:  Connecting the Skilled Workforce with Workplaces and Marketplaces

Employers and educators are looking to do more to prepare workers who have a variety of skills and the knowledge required for our rapidly evolving economy. Workforces are also changing: many new entrants include immigrants, Aboriginals, people with disabilities, and members of other diverse groups. Employers and educators want to know how these changes can drive better results for their organizations. At the same time, they would like to take full advantage of new technologies and innovative tools for the workplace. However, employers often need help, not only to develop the skills of their workers, but also to ensure that these skills are effectively applied on the job.

The key objectives of this event are to:

  • provide an open forum where issues relating to workforce strategy (i.e., finding, recruiting, developing and retaining workers) can be shared;
  • bring together stakeholders from across Canada to share experience and expertise in people-centered investments, including workforce education and training, career development, and other related aspects of building a strong labour force;
  • showcase best practices and innovative solutions designed for a variety of clients, including employers, recruiters, trainers, labour organizations, policy makers, regulatory bodies, immigrants, workers in transition, Aboriginals, and culturally diverse groups;
  • allow researchers and educators to share their latest findings with practitioners who can use the results in the workplace to promote skill development, facilitate a culture of lifelong learning, and generally promote investing in people; and
  • address the needs and differences of the various generations in the current workforce.

This major conference will be national in scope, attracting both presenters and participants from across Canada. This event will appeal to leaders from business, labour, government, post-secondary educational institutions, and community-based organizations, as well as practitioners in the field of career development. The conference program will address solutions to a variety of workforce issues affecting employers, workers and other partners.

Through plenary presentations and interactive workshops, delegates will gain practical advice on how to find, recruit, develop, and retain workers successfully. They will also learn about skills and learning programs that build innovative capacity.

Workforce One-Stop 2012 will include two days of plenary sessions and smaller workshops, as well as a major networking event and space for exhibits and displays. The plenary sessions will outline and explore the major strategic themes and challenges associated with rethinking the workforce. The individual workshops will cover a wide range of sub-themes, best practices, innovations, promising programs, and more.
